In 2007 when we could no longer ignore God's tugging(or direct answer in the mailbox!!) at our hearts to adopt from Guatemala, we took the plunge with our eyes closed. I say "eyes closed" because we leapt with open hearts but with a bit of blissful ignorance. We did the home study and paperwork with eagerness and excitement. We couldn't wait to meet the next little "g" and we loved her even before we saw her referral picture! Upon receiving that first referral picture, I don't think anything could have kept us from jumping on a plane to meet our daughter for a visit trip. But something happened on that visit and the next visit and again on our pick-up trip. We fell in love with a culture, with the people, with Guatemala! We were forever changed and there was no going back to that blissful ignorance. It was a growing and stretching time, and the Lord made it very clear that this process went beyond our adoption. He was calling us to do more and to step farther out of our comfort zone. It led us to become involved in an adoption and orphan care ministry at church which led me to El Salvador where we visited many orphanages. It has led us to speak with many people about adoption whether it be domestic or international. It has led us to some wonderful people at the Eagles Nest Orphanage in Guatemala. It led us to Show Hope. It has led us to many, many wonderful friendships!! Adoption has been such a blessing in our lives in more ways than we could have ever anticipated!

Eyes Wide Open
What we did not anticipate, however, was adopting again. We ARE the "gfivefam" and we were finished. And beyond that, the country and culture that we fell in love with was no longer an option for us to adopt from again. We felt that God closed the door for us, and we would continue on a path to help others adopt while still supporting Guatemala and El Salvador. Part of our ministry at church is to take meals to those families that have returned home with their children after adopting them domestically or internationally. Several families were returning home with their children from Ethiopia, and again we felt God tugging. But we responded with, "No Lord!" "We are done!" "Africa is SO far away!" "We just can't swing it financially again!" "We know too much this time and it scares us!" "And Lord, just to lay it all out there, I don't know how to do African hair!" Did I just admit that? I know, it sounds like a lot of lame excuses doesn't it! We began to educate ourselves on the realities of Ethiopia, and God was opening us up to the huge need there! He was calling US! He didn't put a letter in the mailbox this time, He opened our hearts with EYES WIDE OPEN! We know the need, and really WHY NOT US?? As Grant says, "We have LOTS of love to give!" I can't say that we haven't had "freak out" moments this time! We know this time that God is going to stretch us by going to Africa and showing us things we have never seen before. We know we are going to be a very cultural family that will get more stares than we do now. But as Gerald says, "Bring it on! Let's embrace it!!"
So there it is... We are adopting again! Home study~check, Gladney Application~check, CIS paperwork~check! We are well on our way, and there is no turning back now. We are working on the dossier and dreaming of our next little girl!
Oh, and this is my excuse for my lack of blogging updates! :)

YAY!! Even though I already knew, just seeing this post brought tears to my eyes. I think you guys are such an awesome, loving, family and it is obvious that you are true servants of the Lord.
You know I have been back and forth and thinking (trying to force a decision) I said the same exact thing about hair. I can't hardly do my hair :) I am so excited to see what the Lord has in store for your sweet family :)

I've been waiting for this post for SOOO long! I know the decision wasn't easy to make at first, but now you will look ONWARD to the beautiful gift that lies ahead for you and your family, including GillI (with an I). She will love having a little sis to grow up with, and I just can't wait to watch you enjoy this process of bringing your baby home. Love you lots! See you in 2 hours!

Congratulations Gretchen! That is wonderful news!!!
You know I am beyond thrilled that we are in process together for our 4th children! Who would've thought when we become friends years ago at TU, that God would continue to strengthen our friendship through our connection to Guat and now ET. You were such a great help to me last weekend on my paperwork, and I can't thank you enough. Cannot wait to share in this crazy journey with you and meet our sweet ET girls! Love you!
I just read Jenny's post on her blog about your get-together where she mentioned you were adopting again, and I had to come straight over here to your blog to hear the story. Congratulations. You guys are great parents, and yep...you do have lots of love to give! I'll be praying that it everything will go smoothly.
I could not be more thrilled. It is so crazy the other day I was driving and all of a sudden I thought I am going to leave a comment on the "gfamily" blog that God told me that they are supposed to adopt again. I know you might now think I am so wierd. .but that really happened. I didn't leave the comment b/c I thought it was so crazy and I've never even met you. . but I just knew in my heart you were supposed to adopt again. I am praying for you this very moment and cannot wait to watch this all unfold. God has an amazing plan for your family and I am blessed watching from afar. I love the way you and your family LIVES out your FAITH it is so inspiring!
EEEEEEECK!!!! I am soooo excited for your family!! And, how sweet are your boys?!?! You definitely have a lot of love in your family and I can't wait to see it grow even more. Yay!!
The second time around is such a different experience....like you said...EYES WIDE OPEN! I will be praying for you all as you embark on this new exciting journey together. Can't wait to meet the newest little "G".
Congratulations and best wishes for a speedy, stressless process! Four is crazy but so fun!!!
I loved your line about hair. I wondered about that as well when we were investigating are options. Girl hair has me pulling my hair out as it is. Adoptive Families had an article this past year with suggestions for all kinds of hair. :) I wish I still had it.
Can't wait to meet the new G!
Kara

It's something I've contemplated...but we aren't there yet. Oh yeah, sorry for spelling Gilli's name wrong...Joanna told me tell me about that, I'm such a dork.
