This past week the whole family walked to our neighborhood pond to do some fishing. Gillian and Gretchen came for pictures and to cheer on the boys while they fished. Grant and Grady have never been fishing and they were eager to try out their Lightning McQueen fishing poles. Leading up to our adventure, we spent some time digging in the flower beds to find some earthworms and a grub (the grub is key). We had a great time catching 3" to 5" bluegill for about an hour. Grady seemed to find the hungriest fish that could clean off his hook pretty easily, however he managed to reel in the most fish. Grant managed perfect casting since I was busy baiting Grady's hook. While earthworms are a pretty traditional form of bait, I tried out the grub on Grant's fishing pole. Not to gross anyone out, but the grub is a little meatier and has a tougher skin which makes it harder for the fish to get it off the hook. While Grady and I were wrapping up, Grant's bobber disappeared. I told him to start reeling in his catch. While he struggled with the fish, I noticed that the bobber was farily deep and it didn't seem to act like the other catches. Finally, Grant reeled enough for us to all see his beautiful 14" catfish. I grabbed the line and pulled the prize catch out of the water to snap a picture. Grant was beaming with excitement. I think the boys equate grubs with big fish. I hope that is the case the next time we go fishing.
